Spurred on by their recent strong performances, Brentwood headed away to Bourne Deeping, looking to put their first points of the season on the board.
The elements were against Brentwood from the off, as it poured down, and experimenting with a new defensive pressing system saw Brentwood playing rather stiffly. Within no time at all, Deeping put one past Brentwood; catching the defence napping. Things soon got worse as Deeping doubled their lead minutes later. It began to look ominous for Brentwood who seemed all sizzle and no sausage roll. Desperate to find some composure and not concede, Brentwood came together and began putting some great plays together; turning the game on it's head and really pushing Deeping, as their tactics began to work more fluidly. Brentwood got the reward they were after, as a high shot from Aaron Doyle was baseballed into the back of the net by James Duggan. The half ended 2-1, and despite the score, Brentwood looking the stronger of the teams.
Brentwood continued where they left off, pushing Deeping onto the back foot, making key intercepts but failing to convert. That soon changed as Steven Naven managed to work his way past a number of defenders and then slot the ball on his reverse behind the keeper to level the scores. Feeling the wind behind them, Brentwood soon took the lead for the first time as new boy Jak Taylor found himself on the back post to deflect in an easy goal. Brentwood experienced a scare as Deeping were awarded a goal, but this was soon turned over, as they were adjudged to have obstructed the goal keeper Ian Malone, preventing him from saving the ball. Brentwood seemed to attack at ease although failed to convert their numerical advantage up-front, with poor quality final ball and decision making in the final third proving costly, notably a 3 on 1 that was smothered by the keeper and Aaron Doyle finding the post on a penalty corner. As the game moved into its closing stages, the momentum shifted again, with Deeping looking desperate to salvage a point. This called for some intense defending by Brentwood, with Ian Malone making some fine saves in goal and Simon Teale making a key clearance of the line from a penalty corner. As the clock slowly ticked down, Brentwood turned the ball over and were off quicker than a bride's nighty down the field. Alex Henderson found himself at the end of a slick passing move of tiki-taka hockey and slotted in from close range. But the two goal cushion caused a lapse in concentration and Brentwood conceded quickly after following a quickly taken self pass from the Deeping forward. Brentwood saw out the dying seconds of the half, claiming their first win of the season, concluding the game 4-3.
