1s lose to Stortford

Bishop Stortford 1st XI - 4
Brentwood 1st XI - 2

On equal points going into the game, it was going to be a important for a 12-man Brentwood to secure a win and put some distance between them and their rivals.

Brentwood started brightly, probing the defence with some nice interplay, whilst the Brentwood defence held strong as Bishop Stortford looked to be dangerous on the counter-attack, with dentist making some fine diving tackles to stop the threat. Brentwood were let off the hook when what looked to be a penalty-stroke for a foot on the line was given as a penalty-corner, which the defence comfortably be dealt with. Brentwood tested the Stortford defence, who had little patience when distributing the ball, and consequently turned lots of ball over, although Brentwood failed to make use of their territorial advantage, with the final touch in the circle missing. A ball hit through into the circle was touched onto Steven Naven who opted to shoot from a tight angle, which was pushed wide by the goalkeeper. But, as seems to be becoming a habit, Brentwood conceded first again just before the half, although were by no means out of it.

As the second half got under way, Brentwood only made things harder for themselves as they conceded again, with a penalty-corner somehow finding its way under keeper Ian Malone. Brentwood however responded well, keeping possession well and stretching the play as Stortford became more tired, with Kris Waites running hard at down the line and causing trouble for the Stortford right-back. Slick passing saw James Duggan find his way into the circle and win a penalty-corner. Steven Naven threw a powerful drag-flick into the top right corner of the goal, taking the defender with it, reducing the deficit to only 1 goal. Minutes passed and again Brentwood were on the attack a slow ball into the circle picked out Jak Taylor who touched the ball through the keeper's legs for James Duggan to finish from close. With now the wind, sun and Brentwood spirit behind them, Brentwood were filled with confidence going into the last ten minutes of grabbing a winner. However their hopes were dashed, as a slightly bizarre phantom goal was awarded, putting Brentwood on the back foot once again. Having been reduced down to the bare eleven players, with Steven Naven going off with an injured hamstring, Brentwood were beginning to tire and their push for another goal showed as they were exposed at the back and conceded a soft goal as the final whistle blew. Ending disappointingly 4-2 to the home side.
