As the season draws to an end and Brentwood still in the drop zone, the game became a must-win, if Brentwood were not to rely on other team's results to stay up.
The game started in the worst possible fashion, as from the push-back, Brentwood were dispossessed at the back and conceded in a matter of seconds. Thing got worse as following a missed call by the umpire, captain Simon Teale was sent to the sin-bin for dissent as Brentwood were reduced to 10 men for ten minutes. This put Brentwood on the back-foot, which became apparent, as they created very little upfront themselves, whilst holding on to the ball too long caused lots of turnover in dangerous positions, however they managed to hold out to the end of the half at only 1-0 down, with little to say about the half.
It would be a big task, given the way that they had been playing, but was not impossible. Brentwood needed to up their game, and whilst they retained the ball much better around the back, they achieved very little with the ball they had, as the Southend defence stepped back, and allowed them to make the easy passes. Brentwood had little luck going forward and were turned over as a goal was bundled in by the Old South's forward. It was disputed for obstruction but the goal stood. Brentwood pushed for a goal, but chances were few and far between, and in the last minutes, their desperation was compounded, as Old South's slotted two more cheap goals away, bringing the final score to a disappointing 4-0 loss, and making wins for Brentwood even more vital, with the final five games ahead.
