The game of two halves

This week saw Brentwood Ladies 1s travel to Folkestone on what looked like to be another rainy miserable day, fortunately the sun came out just when the match was about to start. The ladies struggled to get off to a good start and it was the home team that controlled most of the play getting to the ball first and coming away with it on any 50/50 chances. Fortunately the defence of Sandy Pass, Emily Wright, Ruth Tilsley and Haylee Adams stood firm and along with some agile work from keeper Lorna Parsons it meant that Folkestone couldn’t capitalise on any of their chances.

The score line remain 0-0 at half time but the girls new that they would have to work hard in the second half to get a result from their long journey.

This is exactly what they did, from the whistle the ladies found a second wind and controlled a lot of the play. Not before long the girls won a short corner soon into the second half and after a few passes in and around the dee, Kendall Colman found herself in front of goal and accurately flicked the ball into the back of the net. Great distribution from Nat Gilder in the middle created chances for the forwards of Nikki Brimson, Louise Humphreys and Lizzie Tyler to penetrate the oppositions dee.

Against the run of play, Folkestone found themselves overloading the Brentwood defence and managed to pass it round to a forward free in front of goal who equalised the score.

Not to be disheartened, the ladies all fought back and man of the match, Charlotte Holt, who didn’t seem to stop running all game, created another short corner. This time after a similar few passes around the Folkestone defence, Lauren Slater very calmly slotted the ball in the bottom left hand corner. The forwards line continued to put pressure on the oppositions defence to force mistakes and the hard work resulted in the ladies winning the game 2-1

Next week they are home to Bishop’s Stortford who are on the same points as them in the league.
