A tough battle!

On Saturday 9th November, the Brentwood Ladies 2’s played Basildon 3’s away at Gloucester Park. We had a lovely group of supporters who came down to watch and Pilch managed to coach our first half (and of course sneaked on pitch for some game time to help us out too!).

We started the game strong with Grace Hall using her pace to make the runs down the line allowing us to dominate the attack at goal. It wasn’t long before we managed to get a shot on with Isabelle Wiltshire taking a rare swing at goal and Cat McMillan getting the deflection. 1-0 Brentwood! This triggered Basildon to come out harder and faster as they realised they could no longer be complacent about a win, given we lost 4-1 last time we played each other. The defensive squad held their own with Megan Beardwell, Mia Skipper and Jenna Ross fighting them off and Harriet Ellis making some cracking saves as usual. Unfortunately there was only so much we could keep out before Basildon managed to get a goal in after overloading us in defence. With the halftime whistle blown, it is now 1-1.

Monica Hall provided us with some team objectives for the second half and we were off again. We started the second half strong with Esme Young and Izzie Tilbury making some great 1-2 passes down the right wing, enabling Gemma Chambers to try and work her magic in attack winning us a short corner. Unfortunately their goalie managed to save our clean strike at goal and our attempt was unsuccessful. The team kept working at it with Jess Fazerkerley fighting off the opposition and sending the ball to Cat for a shot at goal, unfortunately this led to an injury with Jess and we were down to 11. Our defensive squad were on point with their dishing at back running Basildon tired and enabling the ball to get to Ella Hawes to turn on the attack. We worked hard as a team to try and win the golden goal and with many close attempts we proved unsuccessful, time was running out. With the team giving everything and with no subs we began to tire and Basildon used this to their advantage making a break for goal, eventually scoring the winning goal just before the full time whistle making the final score 2-1 Basildon.

Much to the team’s disappointment we lost out on winning any points however we managed to beat our score against them last time and played awesome as a team. Given the way our league works this year we are to play Basildon another two times and so if we keep up the improvements, we will definitely beat them next time! Bring it on!
